The short answer

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. The word Vimshottari means “one hundred and twenty”, the number of years in one complete cycle. That cycle is divided among nine grahas, and each one rules a long stretch of life called a Mahadasha.

The method is described in classical texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Where a birth chart shows what is promised in your life, the Dasha shows when each theme is likely to become active.

The nine periods and their order

The Mahadashas always run in the same order, and each has a fixed length. Together they add up to exactly 120 years. Most people live through only part of the cycle.

1Ketu7Ashwini, Magha, Mula
2Venus (Shukra)20Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
3Sun (Surya)6Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
4Moon (Chandra)10Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
5Mars (Mangal)7Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
6Rahu18Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
7Jupiter (Guru)16Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada

How your first Mahadasha is decided

Your starting point comes from the Moon. The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and every nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine grahas. The nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth sets your first Mahadasha.

You don’t usually receive that period in full. How far the Moon had already travelled through the nakshatra tells you how much had been used up before you were born. The rest is called the balance of Dasha.

Worked example

Suppose your Moon was exactly halfway through Rohini at birth. Rohini is ruled by the Moon, whose Mahadasha lasts 10 years.

Half of the nakshatra was already crossed, so half of the period had already passed. You start life with 5 years of the Moon Mahadasha remaining.

After that come Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years) and so on, in the fixed order.

Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar

Each Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-periods called Antardashas, also known as Bhuktis. They use the same nine planets in the same order and in the same proportions, beginning with the Mahadasha’s own planet. Each Antardasha can be divided again into Pratyantar Dashas for finer timing.

The Mahadasha sets the broad theme of those years. The Antardasha colours how that theme shows up right now, which is why your Antardasha often explains more about this year than your Mahadasha does.

The formula

Antardasha length = Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet’s years ÷ 120.

Mercury’s Antardasha within the Saturn Mahadasha is 19 × 17 ÷ 120 = 2.69 years, or about 2 years, 8 months and 9 days.

Why your birth time matters

The Moon moves about half a degree every hour, so a small error in birth time moves its position within the nakshatra. A one-hour error can shift your Dasha dates by roughly 3 months in the Sun period, and by as much as 10 months in the Venus period.

The time zone matters in the same way. A 10:30 am birth in London happened several hours after a 10:30 am birth in Delhi, and treating one as the other can move the dates by years. Vedic Tarika reads your birth time in the time zone of your birthplace for this reason.

Different calculators can also give slightly different dates, because they may use a different ayanamsa (the correction between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs) or a different length for the year.

How to use your Dasha

Treat the Dasha as a map rather than a verdict. Knowing that you are in a period of Saturn’s discipline or Venus’s relationships helps you work with the season you are in, instead of being surprised by it.

On this site the emphasis is on simple, regular practice: a mantra playlist matched to your exact Mahadasha and Antardasha, followed using the 1–2–4 rule. Chant once with full focus if you can, listen carefully twice if you can’t, and play it at home four times if even that isn’t possible.

Frequently asked questions

What does Vimshottari mean?

Vimshottari means “one hundred and twenty” in Sanskrit. It refers to the 120 years of the complete Dasha cycle.

Which Mahadasha is the longest?

The Venus (Shukra) Mahadasha is the longest at 20 years, followed by Saturn at 19 and Rahu at 18. The Sun’s is the shortest at 6 years.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

A Mahadasha is a major period of 6 to 20 years ruled by one planet. An Antardasha is one of the nine sub-periods inside it, lasting from a few months to about three years.

Can two people born on the same day have different Dashas?

Yes. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, so people born a few hours apart can start in different Mahadashas, or with very different balances of the same one.

Do I need to know Sanskrit or astrology to use this?

No. Enter your birth date, time and place, and the report tells you which period you are in, what comes next and what to practise.
